Pappu

'Pappu' in Telugu means 'Dal'. I have borrowed this recipe from my friend who is famous for her mouth watering dishes that she brings to work. Typically, the cuisine is accompanied by a lot of tamarind and spice. Not to forget, the chillies - my sincere advise to non-spice lovers is to tread carefully, lest they burn their intestines!

Ingredients
Any variety of dal(pulses)
Onions
Tomatoes
Mustard seeds
Asfoetida (Hing)
Tamarind (This is optional, but highly recommended for that extra punch)
Turmeric
Chillipowder
Green chillies
Greens

Method
1. Pre-cook the dal.
2. In a pan, add oil and splutter mustard seeds.
3. Add the onions and saute. After a couple of minutes, add the tomatoes.
4. Once the onions and tomatoes have become soft, add the pre-cooked dal.
5. Add the tamarind juice, salt, turmeric, hing, and chilli powder.
6. Simmer. The dal is done when it loses the raw smell of the tamarind.
Serve with hot rice and ghee.
